I am headed out to Big Bend National Park on March 15, 2010. Any advice on where to ride and where not to? Thanks in advance.
BTW......we are staying in Fort Stockton TX. This was the nearest place to stay beacuse of spring break. I thought spring breakers went to the coast and what do spring breakers do at a National Park? Just asking.
Wait till 1st week in April, most of them will be gone.
Not that many roads down there, you'll find them all i'm sure.
If you feel like some gravel/sand and a shortcut over to the Santa Elena Canyon check out Old Maverick Road a few miles south of Study Butte.
You can then get on the pavement to Castolon and back to hwy 118.
The Chisos Basin and Boquillos Canyon roads are there and back routes but worth the trip.

Damn !! Ft. Staockton is the closest you can get ??? WOW. I don't know what they do out there these days, but I had some room mates that would go on a Peyote search out that way.... As for roads, there's not much choice, we rode from Balmorhea to Ft Davis on 17, that was a cool ride. From Ft.Davis to Marfa, was pretty flat and straight. That is the best I can help with. Enjoy
Making the trip at the end of May staying in Alpine on the way down, 2 nights in Terlingua and final return night in Fort Davis. FM 170 from Terlingua to Presidio is said to be a great ride.
We got back from our Big Bend ride yesterday afternoon. It was a very nice ride and hardly anybody on the roads. I guess with the temperature only in the high 40's on Tuesday every stayed in the hotels.....................
Driving through Houston and San Antonio = nightmare.

Great timing on your trip.... weather wise.... you couldn't have had better luck! Houston has always been a nightmare, and now San Antonio is catching up....too much road construction. By the time they finish the construction, it is obsolete and should have been bigger.
