Default AZ 288, Paved or Not?

I'm leading a group ride of about 1800 miles, to include the White Mtns. Several of us have ridden the area quite a bit, so I'm looking for some new options, roads less known. The group will be mostly Ultras and Road Glides, most allergic to gravel riding if it can be avoided.

First question is about AZ 288, aka the Young-Heber Hwy, aka the Desert to Tall Pines Scenic Byway. From Google Earth and Bing, it looks paved from 260 south to 188, near Roosevelt Lake. I have found some chatter, but none within the last year. Some says its a great tarmac road, some says the northern portion is gravel/dirt, while other chatter says ADOT is about to pave it. No comments in the last year. Does anybody know the current status?

Second question, in the same region, is on the Fort Apache Res. I'm looking at the road that passed through Canyon Day and Fort Apache Junction. It terminates on the south end Hwy 60 north of Carrizo, and north on Hwy 260. east of McNary. Does anybody have information on this road, or fuel availability in Ft. Apache Junction?

Last question is about hwy 73, also on Ft Apache Res. It runs almost North-to-South from Indian Pine on 260 to Ft Apache Junction, through Whiteriver. Again, any input will be appreciated.

Have you tried the Arizona department of transportation? I'm certain they know the lastest condition of their roads.

I don't know the current status, but a couple of years ago I road it from 188 north to where the pavement stopped, about 15 miles.

You will have to give me a road number, this sounds like 73.

73 is paved and good. Fuel at both ends and probably in Whitewater as well, I just never stopped there.

AZ 288 has some paved sections but is mostly washboard gravel with steep grades and blind turns. It would be miserable on a Harley or anything with street tires.

Technically the 288 ends just north of Young. The Chamberlain trail heads west and connects to the 260 closer to Payson, while FR 512 heads mostly North and intersects the 260 closer to Heber-Overgaard. Neither Chamberlain nor the 512 are paved except for some small segments.
