I keep running into these guys who have a 883 and they put a 1200 piston kit in it and think thats all it takes. I waited and got the 1200R so I would have everything in the motor already. PLUS the dual disk.
The 883R was called a Roadster for one or two years, back in the mid 80's I think, and once again in the last couple of years in international markets.
Other than those the 883R was just an "R" (some say short for "race") but your right that a lot of people wrongly refer to them as Roadsters.
A true Roadster to me is a 1200 with dual disks, a tach and mid controls.

In the US at least there were several years of an "883R" with the narrow tank, mid-controls, longer rear shocks, a dual-disc front end, and the same aluminum wheels as the 1200R.
The rubber-mount 883R models ran from '04 through at least '08 (they hung on to the narrow tank in '08 too, unlike the 1200R models), while there were solid mount models before then with very similar looks.
The only bit the 883R models were missing (aside from the 1200cc engine) was the tach. Oh, and Harley calls the 883R a "Roadster" (at least in international markets).
The 883R Roadster is alive and well and has not gone away, we still get it here in the UK. A friend here has a 1200R, which was sold alongside the 883R for a while.
