One thing I still don't get: the owners manual states you can check the oil cold or hot. But the dipstick states to check the oil hot. Which one is it?

I check mine 2 - 3 times a week. Unless I'm doing a lot more riding than normal. On a road trip, I'll usually check at every other fuel stop.

I will check oil usually when I fill up. I would start by checking oil everytime you get fuel. Once you get an idea about how much oil your bike uses you can adjust your oil checks accordingly. On a long trip I will check it everytime I get fuel just in case something unusual happens.
