The dampers will still do their job, no matter what spring, road conditions determine the need for more or less damping.

compression and rebound dampening controls the speed of the shock. My only question to Progressive was at what length did the spring rate change. They answered that question. I can only assume they have the compression and rebound dampening set for the shock length and spring rate so it doesnt concern me.

Exactly, hence the need for adjustable compression and rebound for racing or off road conditions. When my son was racing motocross we were always adjusting his forks and shock for track conditions.

Yep, I know about that, I rode a MAICO in the 70's and was a race starter at a Moto Cross track in W.Va.

There shouldn't be any need to change spring rate due to using a slighter shorter shock, but simply alter the tuning of the damper to compensate!

If I had to bet, The shorter shocks have the exact same internals so they would have the same dampening hence the need for a higher rate spring.
My point of the post was to clarify at what length they changed the spring rate so others can make an educated choice should they wish to order these shocks.
Not to debate the reasons.
