Default Checking Oil

Feel kinda stupid asking this, but when checking oil (06 1200Low) Ibelieve the dipstick has to be wipedand then the stck fully inserted and screwed in rather than just inserted, correct? And when we do a hot oill check, it's so foamy that no level reading is possible. Reason I ask is that I changed oil and filter in fall prior to storage and topped it off to half way on dipstick (fully inserted) and seems I was way over as it only ran on rear cylinder after fouling plug on the front. My wife ran it about a mile that way . Now need to get level right but now unsure where it should be. Lot different than my touring bike.

If you run the oil level at the full mark, it will be overfilled, and you will get an oil blowby issue through the air cleaner. Best way, if you check it cold, keep it just a tad above the add mark. If you check it hot, keep it halfway between add and full.

I know HD won't "officially" tell you this, but from experience that's the best way I've found.

I've never had the foam problem with the oil hot, but I have heard others with this issue. There is an answer to this, but I don't know the answer.

when cold mine is just a bit above the add line when warm its up a wee bit higher but I only took it to the full line once many years ago and it was a mess so I just listened to what others were doing and its never missed a beat since.

On the jiffy stand, oil cap SCREWED IN, let the foam go away (give it a couple hours). Like Pig said, if your 1/2 on the stick, your OK, I found I could keep mine around the 3/4 full and never had a blow by issue.

Sounds like I'm not the only one who uses the wife's cooking utinsels in the shop...

I had the Harley dealer do my 1000 mile service, but I just did my 5000 mile service myself. The manual calls for 3.6 quarts of oil, so I poured 3.6 quarts in before I checked it. it was WAY overfilled (don't tell my wife I used her baster!). I think just 3 quarts or so is more like it.

Usually between 2-1/2 and 2-3/4 quarts will do it.
