Mystery solved. The pipe he put on in about '99 hada flaw that year such that the bottom of the brake lever hits it if the brake was installed at a lower angle. Only solution is really to replace the pipe.
BUT, I bought it today and rode it home and think I am already used to it. It sounds so good I would hate to have to replace it.
AND, I had a huge smile on my face on my 25 mile ride home and still do! Awesome. Neighbors are jealous and I am hooked...can't wait to ride again.
