I got viking bags for my 883 (sold). I put the mounting hardware on the inside of the bag so it would hug the fender closer when used with the HD QD sissy bar hardware. They hugged the fender about as close as you can get.
Rog, did you lose a lot of usable space mounting the hardware inside the bags?
After thinking about the way you mounted yours, I took a second look at the mount system.
Thinking about leaving the mounts outside the bags, but cutting off the extra length of metal from the mount brackets. This should allow the bags to be moved in closer to the fender by approximately 1 inch, and still be used with the QR system.
Not really, I cut the extra length of the upper "barrel" off too so both the upper and lower were the same thickness. Then mounted them inside with longer hardware. I really never noticed them and stuff never got hung up on it.
If your not sure just try it, your cutting the barrels any way, if you dont like them like that put them outside the bags.
