Question Modification Questions

Hello all,

I am a newb to the Harley community and looking to make a few simple modifications to my 2014 Harley Forty Eight. I was hoping I can get some help from everybody. I am looking to put a new air cleaner and slip on exhaust, but not sure if I need to also get some kind of fuel management flash to comply with these mods.

I am under the impression that a cone air filter and slip-on medication will refigure a fuel management configuration. Is this correct?

I have done several modifications to another bike (CARB) a VS800 intruder. Including fender chop and will more then likely chop the fender on my 48 also.

I will do my best to get pictures of these changes uploaded as I continue with modifications.

With slip on's and just an air cleaner mod, I don't think you will need a fuel manager for a basic tune. They will help to make the bike run better but you would be fine to ride it with out one. I put shorty pipes(no baffles/O2's) and an open air cleaner on my 48 and needed to run a new module/map. The Power Commander V works great. Plus I took my bike to a shop to have it tweaked(dyno tuned) to get the best rpm range through out all the gears from bottom to top. I actually gained another 10 horsepower after my dyno tune.

If your doing an air filter and slip ons you should do something. Fuel moto and dk customs have some good options. I've also been hearing some good things about the new fuelpak that works through your phone fp3. But anyway you can spend $100 to $500 really easy. You need to do some reading and find out what you think will work best for present and future mods before you spend your money.

Thank you for the info, I have heard about the fp3 before and thought it would be a good idea.. Looks like for this set-up its going to run about $1200 for slip-on, intake, and fuel kit.

Default Velocity Stack vs air Filter

So this may seem like a dumb question, but what is the difference between a velocity stack and an air filter?

Slip ons $150-$325
Intake $150-$200
Tuner $215-$500

My set up using Vance & Hines 3 inch staggered slip ons, Screaming Eagle intake, and Fuel Moto Micro EFI total cost was less then $ 675.

So... just to be clear, I would deff need a EFI tuner for a full system like big radius slash cuts and an intake, but slip-ons are recommended to get and EFI tuner with intake?

A velocity stack is simply a short tube providing fresh air to the engine, with no air filter. Fine for a racing engine, but likely to suck in old ladies and other things that can spoil your day! An air filter provides a degree of resistance to the air flow, so the fuelling will need to be adjusted, compared with running a velocity stack.

I ran Vance & Hines Short Shots for about 200-300 miles before I did a fuel pack.

They back fired and popped like crazy.

I recently did the Arlen Ness Big Sucker with a Fuelpack FP3. World of difference.

So smooth and it doesn't backfire or pop anymore.

My girlfriend got me the exhaust for Christmas. At the time, I think it was $440. Looks like it may have increased to $540 or so on Revzilla.

Exhaust: $431.95

Filter/FP3: $503.90

Grand total of $935.85 shipped. I installed it all myself.

Here's a screen shot of the FP3 interface. This was a screen shot taken as the bike was coasting.

You don't have to keep the FP3 plugged in, but if you do, it measures pretty much everything on the bike.

Even has diagnostics and told me that my hi-beam was disabled.
