Default 48 shock question

I am about to get some progressive 412's I ride over 50% of the time 2up and we come in at around 400lbs. I am going to go with the HD spring package but I am unsure if i should stay with the stock 11" shock or raise it a bit to 11.5 or even 12. Will the stock 11" be OK with the HD springs. I just got the bike and we bottom out on the smallest bumps with stock shocks.

Thoughts and opinions would be great.

I would also like to add that I do not want to mess with the front at this time to composite for the raised rear if i go with a 12"

Had a low once and went with the progressive 412s and don't remember bottoming out riding two up. But the combined weight was slightly lower than where you are. I did go progressive in the front also. You might want to contact Progressive and give them your information in regards to bike and weight and see what they recommend. Changing to a 12" in the rear and leaving the front alone may help with the bottoming out but it may also affect the handling. Something to think about.

Also another thing I failed to mention, make sure you adjust the rear shocks according to the weight. You should always change it when switching between riding solo and 2 up.

I do. With stock shocks i am at 5 for 2 up and 4 for solo according to the owners manual specs for weight

Just got off the phone with Progressive CS. I told him my application and he told me that the Sportsters like to have a extra inch in the rear and a 12" would be the best size and to go with the HD springs for our weight

I almost went the 412 route for my Iron several times. I've had my bike almost 2 years now (bought new) and hit 14,000 miles on the stock shocks last weekend. The stockers were just too brutal for 2 up, and only marginal with just me. I finally had enough.

After a ton of research here and trying to decide between Progressives and air shocks, I took the plunge and just last night installed some 12" Streetglide air shocks I got off eBay for $100 w/less than 1,000 miles on them. I figured if I didn't like them I could resell them for the same and come out even.

After riding in to work this a.m. on my 22 mile commute all I have to say is WOW I wish I had done this the day I bought the bike. It's like a new bike. I'm going with 0 PSI in them right now. Will add some for 2 up and try that later this week. It changed the stance ever so slightly, I can barely tell, so no lowering blocks for me.

Anyway, like you I almost went with Progressives, but do your research to be sure that's the direction you want to go. There's tons of threads in here on air shocks and 412's.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I went with Progressive 430's on my 2013 XLC and love them. I especially like how easy the 430's are to adjust on the fly. Several swear by the ride they get with the air shocks. I chose progressives because of the look otherwise I would have gone with the air shocks.
