Default Tire Sizing

I am going to buy a new set of tires. I am planning to order from motorcycle store because they have the best prices that I've found online.

The size i need is 150/80 r16 but they are sold out of that size and only have 140/90 r16.
i tried to research the difference and found the numbers reference width and aspect ratio. from my understanding this would mean the 150/80 is 15cm wide and 12cm tall, and the 140/90 is 14cm wide and 12.6cm tall
is this correct?

will the 140/90r16 be okay for my bike? will i be able to tell the difference between the two tires, both in performance and looks?

In my opinion, I would look for other suppliers that have the size you want and offer competitive prices. Narrower tires will affect ride and look. To put it in perspective, here is a pic of my front stock tire 100/90-19 versus 90/90-21. Of course the 21" will be taller, but the example is just to provide a point of reference. I went with narrower tires mainly to ensure fitment of the taller wheel in the stock fender.

Good luck in your search. Ride Safe. Aloha.

In simple terms a 140/90 will be a bit narrower and a bit taller than the correct size, but there is no reason why you should use one instead of the correct 150/80 IMHO.

In addition, you quote 'r16', which is a radial tyre and I think you will find a bias tyre is more suitable. Take care with the tyre you chose, as there are several different specs for 150/80 tyres! Some are H rated, others are V rated (which will cost more and use softer rubbers), also there are different load ratings. Check your owners manual, or tell us what year and model your bike is, so you get a suitable tyre, instead of the cheapest (which may not be suitable!).
