An '05 has the ICM under the rider's butt, tucked in the frame. An '08 has an ECM that's mounted in the rear fender. Different seats have different pockets to accommodate the particular location of the electronics. Some aftermarket seats will fit all Sportsters from '04 and up. Checking with a seat's manufacturer is about the only way to check/verify fitment (without actually placing said seat onto the desired bike). It may be easiest to get a seat for an '04-'06. Having a 3.3 gallon tank, vs. a 4.5 gallon tank, can make a difference, too. The 4.5 gallon gas tank is longer, requiring a seat that has a shorter nose (pics in thread linked above). The stock gas tank on an '05 1200 Custom is a 4.5 gallon tank.
