Default Has anyones intake seals looked like this?

This is what I"ve found when changing my intake seals. Has anyone got an idea what caused this? (see pic)

The bike is a 2005 XHL 883. The pic wont open so check it out at this link: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...today-129.html

No idea what caused it. Replace them and ride on. Could be factory defective, my speedometer cushion was distorted/miscast from the factory. Finally got around to changing it out (after about 20 years) and speedo now straight, not canted.

I read you should put some grease on the new seals when installing, not sure what type. Also read many change out allen bolts for standard hex heads.

Thanks for the idea, I was thinking human error also, either at factory or before I took delivery on it. Looks like it may have rolled and got pinched or something. I heard the same about the grease. I used some white engine assembly lube. Just a light coating because you need to loose fit the carb and air cleaner base before you snug down the intake bolts. This is basically aligning everything it has to move or slide around a little while tightening down. I am curious to see if the performance will improve, people say 883 has no power, but it is pretty stout for what it is. I am basically trying to get the nice tan color on the plugs and go from there. I may eventually do the 1200 top end conversion, but I have a Super Glide for my "more power " craving. I also have other projects so I would have to really be motivated to do the 883-1200 conversion. I do enjoy the Sportster though but the Super Glide is fun too.

I finished up my intake seals Friday nightt after work. I stopped at the dealer on the way home and picked up the Carb to intake seal so I hopefully wont have to go back into it anytime soon. I started it up, and the throttle response was alot better than when it was leaning out. I didnt get to test ride. , but I was sure tempted. tomorrow I will romp on it for sure. I am excited to have it running correctly, its an 883 so if it isnt running right, not much fun. I will probably run some seafoam through it also and blow it out real good. It wasnt a bad job really. I had to cut a 1/4 inch allen wrench down to a 1/2 inch peice, and use a box wrench to get the intake bolts. I left the carburetor hang from the cables and worked under and over it. I tried to buy the proper tool from a Snap-On dealer, he didnt know what I was talking about. I beleive there is a ratchet box wrench style tool similar to a GM side terminal battery wrench with a quarter inch allen bit in it made for this job, If there isnt, I should invent it LOL!

I was out all weekend romping on the Sportster, I can notice a lot better performance in the lower and top end, the bike is definitely running better, something to think about if ya'll own your bikes for long enough to put over ten thousand on em and they aren't running like they used to. Mine is carbed though, may be a little different on injected bikes. They probably use the same intake seals though.
