Exclamation Mayday!

Mayday! Going down!
So, I just traded my old R1 for my first Harley. Its an 05 883/1250 (oversized cylinders 883 bottom end) Vance and Hines exhaust and velocity stack intake.

Now, I am brand new to the Harley world. I just picked up the bike 2 days ago. I am stationed in Germany. On the way to work this morning I was cruising at about 105mph on the autobahn. When I slowed down to get off the exit ramp, The bike began running very rough. It made it to the end of the off ramp then died. Under initial inspection, I noticed the carb had come completely off the rubber gromet that holds it to the intake manifold. Upon further inspection I noiced when attempting to restart the bike, Oil was leaking from some sensor wire on the left side of the block (forward and low) What is this sensor?

I called the previous owner, and he said that it was probably the crankshaft position sensor. I searched and found this was a common issue, although always under less extreme circumstances. I could not get the bike to start and now there is no power. The previous owner told me that when there is a problem with the CPS the main fuse will blow as a failsafe. I'm thinking the carb could and seal could have been blown out due to high positive pressure from the velocity stack intake but, again with the noob-ness, I don't know. The previous owner said maybe it vribrated off...? This is my first Harley and only my 2nd day of riding it, so I'm pretty much S****** my pants. Pardon the graphic wording (If anyone is offended).

So can anyone verify what sensor this is? Also, on a scale of one - h*** C*** how alarmed should I be that oil is leaking from this spot? Does anyone have any good advice/words of wisdom they could share. I would be very appreciative.

Lesson learned: Harleys are for cruising... I just hope this is not going to be one of those VERY expencive lessons.

Sounds like not a good time for you. I would give NRHS performance a call (I think the guy's name is Dan). http://www.nrhsperformance.com/ If it is a 1250 conversion, they are probably the company that supplied the kit.
With their conversion, you should be able to cruise at 105 without the carb falling off. Vibration is an issue with HD, so checking all of your bolts etc, and a little blue loctite is always a good idea.

Next thing to do is to wait for the really smart people that are on this forum to weigh in on your issue. They are good peeps here, and will probably be able to diagnose your problem.

Congrats on the Sporty and welcome to the Forum.

Sounds like the crankshaft sensor. These are held in place by one cap allen screw and take all of five minutes to remove. They are sealed by an "O" ring, sounds like either the "O' ring has failed or the sensor casing has cracked allowing oil to pass. Either way not a disaster, the sensors are reasonably cheap (an "O" ring even cheaper). Remove the screw an pull out the sensor, there is a wiring connector close to the sensor (about 6" away) that unplugs and the whole thing can be removed. It should be obvious what is wrong.
As for the carb coming off! you must have been flogging the ***** off it! The carb is held in place by two plates on either cylinder and sealed with rubber gaskets should be straight forward to fit back on.
As the engine gets hot the cylinders expand, the carb is position inbetween the expanding cylinders at this speed the engine would be very hot to a point where the carb would be loose , coupled with vibration at this sort of speed and the likelyhood that the plate bolts were loose probably caused the problem.
I personally find the Sportster loves 60 - 70mph, I can honestly say I've never tried 105mph!
Hope this helps

Probably need a seal for the sensor no big deal. As for the carb can we see a pic.? Depending on the breather system your running with your carb you may not have anything holding the carb on with that stack. You may need to change your breather set up or fab a support bracket. Or your carb will keep falling off.
