So i've had my 2011 forty eight sportster for all of 2 weeks...first bike and first harley of course. I had never been on a motorcycle in my life until the day i bought the bike (took MSF course)
A lot of people said get the 883 that the 1200 is a bit big for first time riders but i am glad i got the 1200. I respect the power it has and have been very careful about following the recommendations from the class and from this forum. I can see where there is potential for me to get in trouble but i've been cautious and mindful of the power and potential the bike has.
I've put 500 miles on it since i got it two weeks ago...driving around Vegas accounts for about 200 miles and took a trip to stateline california (120 round trip) and today i rode to laughlin and back (170 miles round trip)
I love the forty eight i am very happy i went with a harley and very glad i got the forty eight fits me perfect..
the irony today came in the fact that i did my longest trip so far 170 miles, not a single scare and then when i got back i was visiting a friend in her apartment complex a douche turns in front of me and i tipped the bike..he was going about 20mph in the complex i was maybe 5-7 mph. Luckily it was very low speed, i got a little burn from exhaust and bike tipping over on me and some abrasions from the rocks i fell into but bike was not scratched or nothing. glad it happened at 5-7 mph not 70
Yeah the 5 mile thing is true even with cars i drove over 200 miles one day, leaving my house and i slid into the ditch. i was mad. good thing the car was only 500 bucks haha. no spill on the bike yet though thank god.
Good to hear you are ok and the bike is good too ... some folks are just d bags and you need to keep an open eye for them. Enjoy your 48 and welcome to the family brother!
The 5 mile thing is no lie! I plowed snow in a blizzard for 3 days with no incident, come home and hit a tree in MY YARD! Truck only had 8000 miles on it!
Been down a couple times on my sportbike high speeds and low speeds. Once you get the first one out of the way a little bit of the going down fear leaves. And you reactions to close calls gets better. Congrats on the no damage and keep your head on a swivel. It's a chest game even in a parking lot.
Glad you are alright ... Idk how but I did something very similar and was so suprised/insanely happy that the only thing on the bike that got scratched was the bottom of the stock exhaust... but the 5 mile thing is deff true I rode 125 miles this past saturday came () close to getting taken out by a women rolling thru a stop sign in a white suv looking down at her phone 3 blocks from my house ! it was close to the point I yelled Holy fudge out loud ... only I didn't say fudge haha

Great lesson learned and congrats on all the long distance riding you are doing at such an early stage of your riding career.
I had more close calls the first 2 rides around the block of our neighborhood with people backing out of driveways into me and pulling out of side roads into my lane than all the miles since.
