Default Just ordered a detachable windshield...

Just ordered a detachable windshield...The local stealer had a Spring Sale today and I stopped in to see what was going on. I went with the intention of possibly picking up some mirrors and gear, ended up ordering a QR Compact detachable windshield (#58063-04) with a 15% sale discount ($300 OTD)...One thing I noticed was that the clamps mounted to the windshield wouldn't allow for much adjustment on the tree. I thought that there was some adjustment up and down. The display model didn't appear to have any adjustment at all. My question is this - how do I adjust the height if I can't slide the shield up and down the forks? Can the shields be adjusted to accomodate personal riding preferences or am I stuck with whatever the factory provides??

You're pretty much stuck with the way it is. It seems the majority of people like the windshield height to be just belowtheirsight line asthey're looking down the road. What people do is cut down their windshields to the desired height. You can have a glass shop do it for you or research it here and learn how the do-it-yourselfers accomplish it.

Just picked up the shield at the stealership and put it on the bike. I was kinda surprised that it wasn't nearly as visible from a distance as I thought it would be. Of course the first thing I did was get on the interstate for somehigh speed testing. The first thing I noticed was the reduced wind noise. I'll take the highway home after work and see how it works on a longer run.

I don't understand why you can't slide it up and down on the forks; I have a Harley quick-release compact as well and that's all there is to it.

Your quick-release bracket should be mounted to a pair of fork brackets on each fork that can be moved up or down about an inch or so; at least that's the way it is with mine.

Take a pic of it and post it so that we can see it to try and help you, if you can't figure it out. I'm going to try and provide a pic of mine in the meantime, if I can get this stuff to work right. My pic will have green lines pointing to the fork brackets.

I put a compact, quick release on my 07 xl883L, and there was no room to move up and down. I replaced the windshield with Memphis Shades replacement glass that was 17". They fit the Harley hardware perfectly. I got the blue tint lower to match my bike. Looks good.

On the HD quick disconnect models like I have there is no hardware on the fork tubes its all on the shield in the form of cam-locking clamps. On the custom and low models (I have a custom) there is only about 1/4" of room if that on the tubes when the shield is clamped on so there is little up/down adjustability. I have the std. hgt. which is fine for me. Some folks say the compact is too short and others just buy the std. and cut it or have it cut to their desired hgt. When I'm cruising around town or dont plan on long rides above 50-60 mph I prefer to go without it and did not want any hardware left on the forks and HD QD is the only onethat I know of like it. I can tell you that from my perspective it's a great investment if you ride year round or do lots of hwy. miles.

I have one, and on my 883L, there isn't really any room for an adjustment. I sit a bit high in the saddle, and even the full size shield is somewhat too low for me, but it's only for long range interstate rides, and I've gotten used to the wind from the shield hitting me smack in the goggles.

I have some issues with my left elbow, and the weenie shield helps tremendously with that on long high speed trips. I no longer have to hold on to the bike at 80 mph for hours at a time.

I just mounted my HD quick release windshield (Std Ht).
On the '07 1200C the installation guide state you had to move the clutch cables. In reality I didn't need to. Works just fine. Although same thing you mentioned there isn't any room to move up or down.

Love it - Wish I had it during a severe storm earlier in the week. Highway tests allow me to pick up another 5mph before any head buffeting. 75/80 . I like it for the ease of taking off during weekend trips.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, on the custom (XL1200C) there is very little up and down adjustment available. The shield sits right about at eye level for me and it seems to divert the wind pretty well. If I sit a little higher in the saddle, I get hit right in the face and the wind noise picks up considerably. I found myself easily reaching speeds of 75-80 MPH on the highway with little buffeting. Didn't realize I was moving that fast till I looked down at the speedo. I think I'm gonna like the benefits, even though I'm still not sold on the appearance. Maybe it'll grow on me...
