Question Removing oil pressure sensor

Hey all,

Completed my 2008 1200XLC rebuild, have had 2 oil issues and now the oil sensor seems to need cleaning.

I'm looking for a simple way to remove the sensor, any routines that worked for you?

Regards,

.

Best I remember, it's been a few years since I replaced mine, was that it's not in a wrench (socket) friendly location. I was able to grab it with a pair of Channellock pliers.

I believe in using the right tool for the job. HD makes a 12 socket with about 1/4 th off it cut out like the oil filter tool. It has a handle on it. It will only rotate a fraction of a turn. I had borrowed one from a HD tech. The reason that some of the sidewall must be cut away is that the sensor almost touches the case at the rear of the sensor.

Then I bought a 12 point socket and made my own. I used it to install an oil cooler uses the stock location of the sensor. The sensor gets moved to another location.

The tool is not needed often but when you do it makes it easy.

And some people can afford to have (is it 16 now or more?) Harley's in their garage and money is no object.

Just don't gorilla tighten the new one, I believe you can actually crack the case if you go too heavy on the wrench.

at 1/8 or 1/16th turn per effort I think 12-16 IP is snug plus a bit. I have done this kinda thing before but never in such a cramped space.

WHAT SIZE is the 12 point socket?

Anyone got a picture of the HD-48386 tool? Cant find anything, I would make one or something similar to jimmy the old one loose.
is this it?

cHarley, we all wish for better times too, enjoy the Hammering.

I have a "wobbly" socket for removing these kind sensors from cars. Mine says 1"- 1 1/16" on it. Maybe you can find one of those at an auto parts store? I think those sensors are NPT threads so they taper.

07 Nightster...I had to replace this sensor once.

+1 for the right tool.
Nothing at parts store, Home Depot, or my own tool box etc seemed to work for me.

I recall there is a picture of the right tool in the OEM factory service manual and it is an open ended wrench.

Not simple, limited access, I believe it took me over an hour.

As I recall, I removed the oil filter, the rectifier and the plastic support panel behind the rectifier. Then I used a channel lock tool to remove and install the sensor.

None the less - please have fun wrenching on your bike!
