I don't know if he was being a jerk or not. I never thought of it before but his description coms pretty close. Because of it's narrowness it could easily give one the idea of riding a dirt bike on the street. Sometimes the glass isn't always half empty!
We have an 07' Road King FLHR and just picked up a 05' 883 Sportster Custom. After riding the Road King and jumping on the Sporty. I rodeMoto-X bikes for many years and I have an XR650L right now, this thing has a 37" seat hight. The Sportster reminds me of the old dirt flat trackers. My Sister lives in a different State and did not know about our recent Sporty purchase, she just e-mailed me with a picture of the 883 that she is going to buy. I told her that she is going to love that bike, I pretty much described it as a mini bike that can go really really fast and likes to let people know that it is arriving. It is so nimble compared the the Road King. I can jump off the King and the Sporty feels great, right at home but when I go from the Sporty to the King it takesa little getting used to. I sure don't regret our purchase.
Some where along the line the HD crowd kind of split and now it seems that you need to spend a minimum of $18,000.00 to be recognized as a fellow HD rider
Being mainly a dirtguy, he was being an idiot, even the worst of the dirt bikes I have ridden over the years were not as much of a huge lumberingbeast as my sportster! The thing is over twice the weight of anything that could be considered a "dirt bike".
This is one of the reasons that I bought my '07 Ultra ( the other reason is for momma to be comportable ) , but I still love to ride my sportster , It has alot of things that I just cant get out of my Ultra. Speed , Handling , Looks , and Noise . There is no way that you can get the sound out of a new Harley that you get out of an old one.
I don't think he was being a jerk. I use to ride a Sportster and from time to time....I still ride friends Sportsters. They are pretty good bikes.
For me....it feels like a heavy enduro bike. There is a guy in town that has a early nineties Sportster. He crashed it several years ago and he only had liability on it. He ended up putting knobbies on it and used it at his farm. I still see it from time to time getting gas....but hardly ever. Dirtbike Sportster??
Real bikers who get it would never trash another dude's or dudet's ride. I just bought my firt HD bike in JAN. 04 1200R and am a bit surprised at the other (lets not call them bikers it assumes they have class) lets call them cagers with bikes responses to the sporty crowd. When I was growing up every Harley got respect and everybody got along. I dont know what this is today with the them vs them mentality. Thats why I wont particapate in the harley events or rides around here it just doesnt feel right. Its very annoying to have people shooting their mouths off and not havig a clue as to what they are talking about. They get their bike out once a week on sunday to look good and pretend. What ever Ive ranted enough.
After riding the Road King for a month My Sportster feels like a little rocket. Maybe not a dirt bike as you think of them but like those supermoto (dirtbikes with street tires)So he asn't that far off. This is just my $.02 and what do I know, both my bikes have seats.
