Default Installing Forward Controls on Iron

For anyone that has done it, is there anyway to avoid removing the exhaust when switching from mids to forwards on a 2015 Iron?

Looking at lining up some winter projects and definitely want to put some forward controls on, but it looks like I'll at least have to pull off both the rear and front exhaust slip-ons since the rear heat shield clamps are jammed into the forward.

I removed the front slipon only to speed up the removal of the bracket.

I know it isn't the same thing, but I put highway pegs on my SuperLow, so I have two options for riding position. Just a thought and much simpler to fit! I used the H-D kit #49053-04A.

My balance pipe has recently split, so I am currently attempting to remove the exhaust system to replace it, which isn't proving very easy. I may even have to read the darned service manual!

As for fitting forwards, if you don't have any instructions, then take a look at the H-D website and the Shop tab, where you can download the instructions for one of their kits.

JMO, but I like to have more room than less when working on mechanical projects so I always clear-out anything in my path. This way you ensure everything fits & aligns properly. There's not much to Sportster exhaust removal so my vote is to just get it out of there and make room for the forward ctrl hw.

On my 2000 I had to pull the pipes off and unbolt my rear master cylinder to remove the front sprocket cover and take out the peg bolt. I originally had forwards installed but wanted to try the mids on my bike. The mids lasted about 1 hour and then I decided to sell them to somebody I hate.

I just did this. I loosened the front pipe so I could move it out of the way.

Like some said the easiest way is to remove the front exhaust. I believe 2015 bikes have the interconnect ports on the head pipes. I have a 2011 XL1200L and the interconnect ports are on the slip-ons.

I tried cutting my allen, bought special tools that takes up little space, and loosened the exhaust to provide more room. None of theses worked for me but I was trying to remove the brake pedal so needed to get the the clevis retaining ring and the brake rod. The easiest was just to remove the front exhaust. Like a couple of the posters said, it gives you tons of space to work and enhances proper alignment of the mounts. Because you are removing the entire mount, you may be able to get away with just loosening the pipes, but it is easy to remove the exhaust. It also gives you a chance to replace your flange gasket and interconnect port gasket at the same time if needed, but since your bike is new probably would try loosening the exhaust first. Here is a pic with the front exhaust off - post #29

Thanks everyone for the input! I was thinking about putting a new exhaust or slipons on the bike anyway so I might just see if I can get all the parts I want and then do the work over a weekend or two. Switching the controls definitely looks easier with the exhaust off.
