OK, that makes sense. Is it fairly obvious how the cover comes off once the springs are compressed?

Once the spring is compressed, the horse collar slips right off.
You may need to slip down or align the opening of the nylon bushing to remove the collar. It comes off pretty easy.

Thanks! Hopefully won't need to do it but always good to have just in case info prior to needing it!

Mounted mine yesterday. Used the spacers specified in the instructions, plenty of room without removing covers. These are 12", just a bit longer than stock:
