Default 07 Sportster Oxygen sensor code

HELP! My 07 Sporty threw a P0154 code Friday which indicates rear O2 sensor failed. So I went and bought a new sensor, installed it and cleared the code. Rode it about a mile and the code came back, cleared it again, rode about 4 miles and the code came back, any ideas or suggestions? I took an ohm reading on the sensor and it checked out ok, what else should I be looking for?
My son is in town for 2 weeks with his HD and we planned on doing some riding, not letting it sit at the dealership waiting to be worked on. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello? Am I the only one who has had this problem? I find it difficult to believe that I have the ONLY Sporty, or fuel injected HD, to have this problem. Not looking for an exact solution, just some possible causes so that I can check them out. I'm avoiding the dealership as much as possible, not because of their rates but because I don't feel like paying for a tech to throw new parts at my bike until he cures it.

I have not had that problem. Since the O2 sensor was already changed and checked out okay according to meter, I would now look at the connector and the wiring. The connectors can get damaged sometimes.

I subscribed to this post because I was having a similar problem, but I didn't want to try to answer (because I don't know the answer). I can tell you that I replaced my O2 sensor and that corrected the problem. The fact that you replaced yours and the problem persists suggests that perhaps you've installed yet another bad O2 sensor. Unlikely? Yes, but weirder things have happened.

Having said that - a disclaimer: I am NOT a mechanic, nor am I a motorcycle expert. I am pretty good with computers, however, and your situation could be computer related. After all, the bike's brain is a computer, and probably not the best computer (based on my research). I built hundreds of computers and did a lot of troubleshooting on them and I can tell you that they can be buggy. Sometimes I'd put a new card in and it wouldn't work and after 100 hours of working on it I'd figure out some weird sequence of things that you had to do to get it to work.

When I was researching my "Rear O2 Sensor Inactive" code I came upon a post that said you have to unplug the O2 sensor from the ECM and then re-flash the ECM, then unplug the ECM, then plug the sensor back in, then turn the quad flashers on for 10 seconds, etc. I couldn't find the post again but you might look under "P0051" code because that's the code for inactive rear O2 sensor on the later models.

Like I said, I didn't want to post but I was hoping somebody would jump in with the answer. Maybe be suspect of the gimpy computer instead of the O2 sensor. Good luck and let me know what you figure out!

I gave up and hauled it to the HD dealer, I checked everything I could with the exception of the ECM, I don't have a scanner for HD's. I'm hoping it's just a programming issue, but am prepared for the worst. I was kind of hoping with this being a 9 yr old bike that someone has experienced this before and could direct me on what to check.
For my first HD I'm not starting out with a pleasant experience. I hope it gets better because I haven't even put 200 miles on it since I've owned it, two weeks now.

But thanks to those who did reply, whether it got fixed or not I appreciate the replies.

Try swapping the front and rear sensors and go for a ride. Check the codes and see if you get a PO134 indicating the front sensor failed. Then you will know for sure if its a bad sensor.

I'm not having a GREAT first HD experience. So I made an appt with the local HD dealer after going and talking to them, they seemed nice enough, and dropped the bike off and gave them all of my contact info a week and half ago. Yesterday, I called about the status of my bike and the service writer says "I'm glad you called, I forgot to get your phone number." ??? I gave him my number, and the other service writer when I called last week, which he never relayed to my service writer. Anyway, my concern is this: Is my bike in good hands at a HD dealer, or should I have found a reputable independent shop? They've had my bike for a week for the O2 sensor issue and he tells me yesterday that there is some fuel valve that is leaking and preventing the bike from running properly and they needed to fix that so they could accurately diagnose the O2 issue, ??? Am I missing something? I'm not having the same feeling about the dealer as I did when I went there, fortunately I am a former ASE certified technician so I will figure out what he is talking about and if he's blowing smoke I'm calling him out.
