Default Adjusting Primary Chain

The Harley Service Manual and the Clymer manual both say to turn the engine and check the tension on different spot son the chain. How exactly do I accomplish this?

In other words. How do I make the chain go around so I can check the tension in different spots?

Also when I lift the chain it goes above the hole making it hard to measure. Is it normal?

Thanks,

With the inspection cover off (the small round one) bump the starter. But don't start.

Here's a good video for adjusting. Bike might be a different model then yours but the principal is still the same.

The other way is to put the bike in 5th gear and just roll it like you're bump starting it. It's super easy if you have the spark plugs out, and not too bad if you have them in as long as your bike isn't high compression.

Bumping the starter is easy. If carb'd, leave the choke off so it is less likely to start. Not sure how to prevent it on the EFI other than don't hit the button very long.

I accidentally tightened the adjuster thinking that it was the drain plug for the chaincase oil. I bought the service manual and the clymer manual and didn't bother to look at where the drain plug is in the manuals.

I wished I had planned to adjust the chain and checked the window first. That way I would have seen how much play it had to begin with.

I bumped the start button three times and got consistent measurements each time. It appears to be between 3/8th and 1/2th.

I may try rolling the bike in 5th and checking again just cause I'm paranoid.

Personally I've never bothered finding the tightest point, I just adjust it wherever it is and have never had a problem.

If you play around with it long enough, there are tighter spots. At least a tenth of an inch difference.

I think the actual range in which it will work is pretty wide. It just can't be tight and it can't be so loose it scrapes the top of the case.
