I started out on a '77 XLCH, and had nothing but big twins after that. I'll be 61 years old in a couple of days, some arthritis and a hip and knee replacement in my very recent past, so I'm thinking of a Sportster. My question, found a 1999 883, all stock, with 12 HUNDRED miles, some accessories, for $3500. Decent deal?
I agree. The thing is, you will pay for what you want. Cost has nothing to do with it. I fell in love with my 96 and paid even more for it. Need pics my friend! I'm just an ole 54 YO. But I love my old sporty.
I paid $2400 for my 2004 883 with 43k miles on it. Most 883s around here in the Chicagoland area go in the range of $3k with around 20k miles on it. You could find a 1200 for around $3500-$4000 here if you took a trip out this way I'm not sure what they go for in Your area but honestly $3500 doesn't sound half bad for what you'd be getting
I can't comment on price, but budget for changing all fluids and fitting new tyres, if it doesn't have recent ones. Best of luck with your new joints and bike!
I paid $2,900 for my pristine '98 883 standard with about 3,500K miles on it. The guy had just put new tires and a new battery on it. I did a couple of "upgrades" and I love it.
Get the service manual and start watching YouTube videos. Thing about those Evo Sportys is they are easy to work on. Great way to get your hands dirty and love your bike even more.
If it is all stock you are going to want to change out the seat and shocks. I found the stock seat on 883s to be only good for short rides. Also the shocks are rough.
Good news is a lot of parts are available on here or Craig's List.
And something everyone always forgets is you are going to need gear. Check on sales for a helmet. Boots and gloves can be found on sale and sometimes the best deals are not at motorcycle shops. Jackets can be found on here or on Craigs List for a great price.
I got an 883R two years ago with just installed, tires, battery, drive belt, carb rebuilt and tuned for the SEII exhaust and intake. That was done at the dealer for $1,600.
I paid $3,500 for it and was very happy.
Low miles and pristine condition is worth more than what year. Low miles can be a two edged sword sometimes.
