Hello, I'm completely new to the motorcycle world and am having issues with my bike my dad gave me. Please be patient if things don't make sense and I'll do my best to clarify. As in the title it's a '99 hugger that was converted from an 883 to a 1200, has 10-1 pistons and Screamin' Eagle cams. The carburetor was damaged trying to put performance jets in and so I recently put a S&S Super E carburetor on and since then it hasn't been working. I've messed with the adjustments for the air/fuel mixture, idle screw, and ignition module. Times I have had it running it's either run very rough or has fell on its face throttling up. Other than that it only cranks the whole time. Any ideas would help, thanks!
when it's cranking does it smell very strong of gas? The stumbling when trying to accelerating sounds like it's running lean. Could be jet size or float level being too low. If the carb is brand new, I would think it would be clean, but probably not a bad idea to blow air through all the pinholes in the jets of the carb. It wouldn't hurt to pull your fuel line off and make sure your petcock is delivering plenty of fuel when turned on. Normally if it's running rich it will run like crap, but you'll smell fuel and see smoke out the exhaust. The only other thing I could think of when it stumbles when trying to accelerate would be the accelerator pump on the carb. If you have it running, give it a bunch of throttle at once, if it dies out some, the pump might need adjusted, replaced. With the air cleaner off you should be able to see the pump squirting fuel into the carb intake when you twist the throttle.
When you're cranking it, pull a spark plug and make sure you've got at least a bright orange spark, preferably a blue one. That's all I can think of.
Fellow S&S carb owner here, in fact I like 'em so much I bought a complete engine to go with mine! Do you have the S&S instructions for your carb? If not go to their website and the Tech Info tab, to download the #51-1012, Installation and Jetting Instructions for S&S Super E and G Series "Shorty". Make sure you're using fresh fuel.
If you are having problems with getting your bike to run, then don't agonise for too long. Contact a local indy who can probably sort it out in a pretty short time.
