Would the stock belt be able to handle this or would it be time for a chain?

I think S&S did a review of cranks and their strengths; in particular welded cranks. The welded one was pretty much as strong as stock when it cam to the forces involved in the bottom end.

IMHO, depends on how you ride. Kind of the same concept for the crank and rest of the build. Random things break, but if you ride like a maniac, things have a better chance of wearing out.

In short, if you enjoy dropping the hammer at 7 grand when you leave the bike shop, I would chain drive it.

Interesting vid. I'm super green to anything crank related. I know the later XB has a 1.5 pin and that's a good thing. S&S doesn't make an Xl 1.5 crank unless its special ordered. Carillo doesn't make a rod to fit a custom 1.5 S&S crank. The Carrillo rods would be custom too. I had these things priced......$$$$$$ouch

so you split the bottom end on your missile and added a buell XB crank? (asking in ignorance) it bolted right in?
