I've noticed over the past several weeks an oil residue gradually covering the front fins of the forward cylinder and behind the rear cylinder. Is this just blow by? Should I clean the fins periodically, maybe w/a toothbrush or something, or is it something worse?

sounds like rocker gaskets but, no pictures or other info was provided. wash the engine up really good, check your oil level, then take it out for a long ride. see what happens.
don't worry. if it is the rocker covers... it's not major and relatively easy to fix. post some good pictures before you wash the engine.

Sounds like a recent event for me too. Yes it was the rocker gaskets, be sure to also keep an eye on nearby bolts, as they will back out due to the oil penetration. (See pic below)
