Default Popping Problem?

Hi,
I had V & H ShortShots and the SE Air Cleaner installed by the dealer a few months ago. I also had them to the download. Everything seemed to be fine, but now I'm noticing a lot of popping and an occasional small backfire. I accidently filled the bike with 89 octane yesterday and the problemis worse. Does that mean the bike is running too rich or too lean? Also, since the dealer did the install and download, shouldn't they be responsible for fixing the problem? (I haven't called them yet...)

Also, this almost always happens during deceleration or downshifting.

Thanks,
Barry

Well, if it happens right after you use 89 gas, finish the tank, fill it up and see how it goes. My buddy uses 89 gas on his 1200 for more than 2 years, never had any problem. The popping sound, did you hear it on deceleration? Does it usually pop when going downhill? Mine does that too, especially going downhill and deceleration. I talked to a harley mechanic the other day about this problem, he said it could also be the unburned gas going to the hot exhaust on deceleration, the more open the pipe you have, oxygen helps ignite the gas, popping could occur. I don't know if that's BS but it makes sense to me. I must say the popping gets more compare to my old SEII exhaust.

The popping is worse with the 89, but it does it with the 93 also. When I first had the remap done there was barely any popping at all. It seems like it escalated after the 1K service, but I can't imagine why. I haven't noticed it doing it more going downhill.

The popping and backfiringis unburned gas that combusts in the pipe. I don't have an EFI Sporty, but my last 2 bikes were fuel injected. I found that any aftermarket exhaust set up really needs a dyno run to be dialed in and tuned properly. Luckily in the sportbike world, folks would post up maps to specific setups that you could load in your bike - but that requires a power commander. What "download" did the dealer put in for you? Was it specifically for your V&H pipes and SE air cleaner?

That's a great question that I don't have an answer for. They just told me that I would be fine with a download, but didn't tell me specifically what setup it was for. I am really ignorant about this subject, but imagine it was a kind of generic thing, or one setup for the SE pipes and intake.

Check out the power commander website. You might want to consider investing in one and having your bike tuned in on a dyno. I didn't see any downloadable maps specific to your setup . . http://www.powercommander.com/powerc...55&yr=2007

I recently had the stage 1 done on my bike and it still pops. They got most of the big ones to stop, but could not get rid of the popping totally

You could also try V&H's fuelpak. I don't know anything about it, but it sounds like it would do the same thing as a PowerCommander, and from what I read on their site, you wouldn't need to have a dyno run to set it up. Plus, it's cheaper. http://www.vanceandhines.com/fuelpak.html

What is the worst case scenario if the popping continues? Can it cause serious damage?
