So, new to the forum, Just picked up an 87 Sporty 1200. Ran ok when I picked it up. Was breaking up on the top end and was sitting. Has an S&S E shorty on it. Went through the whole thing, gaskets, jets, accelerator pump. Ran great for about 20 miles. Died on me after getting gas, got it started and it began to smoke from the front cylinder then the rear about 2 min later. Now it will fire up and then immediately die. Im sort of new to SAE bikes. What am I missing? Really want to get this thing on the road.
Side note, I replaced the fuel filter, fuel lines and coil as well at this point.
Took the new plugs out to inspect and saw a lot of fuel. Fired the bike up with the cleaner off so I could see what type of fuel delivery I was getting. Primary is spewing fuel from everywhere. I think I may have a cracked carb. Going to check tomorrow.
Check for the float needle/seat. I had flooded cylinders once before I rebuilt mine. With good rings it's not a huge deal, blow out the cylinders.
Here's the potentially bad news on the S&S. The throttle body had a notorious weakness at the mixture adjustment screw. If seated too tightly, the casting will crack and chip out around the needle. That could have cracked out badly enough to cause the issues you're talking about. Did you notice anything like that when you did the carb?
