Trust me, you don't need a tachometer, learn to listen to the engine sound.
Shift at speed according to the manual first, then learn when to shift as you ride, you will do it automatically after a while. Remember you are not a formula 1 racer, you don't have to hit the max to get the most of the torque out of your bike, as long as you don't over rev or lug the engine, you will be all fine.
For the price we pay for bikes why do they not come with a tach. I know its the old school look right? I like tach on my bikes , cars and anything else with a motor. Except maybe the weed eater or lawn mower. Tachs can tell you alot about how your bike is running sometimes. JMO
Buda, I hear you, we should always get what we pay for. Look at all the Harleys, they usually come with what's getting the bike to run and look ok, then they sell you accessories to make the real money. R model comes with a tach.
I don't know about you guys but I am insistant on a tach. Thats why I went with a 1200R. I do see why they left the tach off of the 1200C models they are set up more for crusing vs the 1200R which is more set up for fast hard driving. Not that you can't drive A 1200C the same way just from the factory point of view I can see why they left it off. But what I can't understand is why they left it off of the 1200 nightster. I guess I have a tach fetish.
Buda you are 100% correct - I was amazed that my 2005 883L didnt havea tachometer. I think it's pretty freaking cheap of Harley to not put tachs on all of their machines. I put a tach on mine before I even put it on the road. Sure, I can ride without one but why should we have to? For what they charge for these bikes throw in the $250 tach or whatever it costs.
Maybe it's my aircraft mentality spilling over but I like engine gauges....
It's simple....you know how to drive stick in a car, right? Remember how after a while you just KNEW when to shift based off how it felt? That's what you're looking for on this...it's no different.

Exactly, you don't need no stinkin' tach... Shift by Rev... Though I don't need it, I am glad mine has one, just to have.
Just give it time. You will just know when to shift. If you hit the rev limiter try to notice what speed you are at. Then you will know for sure when you need to shift by.
