You have to take in some variables such as position of bike, atmosphere, how much attention you are paying to the top of the tank, etc. Even the slant of the gas platform that you are on will make a difference. It would be hard to be able to get exactly the right amount into the tank everytime you filled up.You're dealing in tenths, a much smaller amount of space to fill with a larger margin of difference to account for.

There is a "reserve" on the efi bikes. When the light comes on, your now on reserve. Just no petcock.
The manual tells you how much is supposed to be left.
On my Nightster, the light comes on at about 95 miles. I get 45mpg. Don't remember what the manual says, but that calculates out to 53 miles on reserve.
