The 2008 manual clearly identifies it in section 1.11.
When I said "no it doesn't", the intention of the statement was to clarify, there is no verbage stating they are the same thing. Just 2 descriptions of the same process. I'll look at mine again though in section 1. It's very possible that I'm wrong.

Ya see? It doesn't actually say anything about it. With that being said--there's a ton of guys on this board that jump on guys for asking questions before they reference the service manual that "everyone should have". It doesn't cover every detail. And they are NOT cheap. So go easy on guys with dumb questions!!! Love ya.

It tells you to fill the transmission by pouring the oil in through the clutch cover. It assumes that you understand that the big gloopy thing the clutch cover is attached to is called the primary chaincase, on account of the primary chain being inside it, wrapped around the clutch. It then goes on to warn you not to overfill the primary chaincase while doing this. Seems to me it covers both transmission and primary chaincase in one section.

You have to remember though that the factory service manual is aimed at trained HD Techs who already know what a chaincase is and that in the case of the Sportster it is pretty much uniquely connected to the main transmission and shares the same oil. I can't think of any other bike that does that (except the Jap bikes etc that use the same oil throughout the whole engine/primary/trans unit, which is different again.)

It doesn't actually say anything about it.
So you are expecting the manual to describe that the primary and transmission is combined; to explain that it is different to a big twin where they are separate? That has no place in a FSM.

If you start by reading the list of tasks that have to be carried out in the maintenance schedule you will see you need to change the engine oil and the transmission lubricant. After that why would there be any confusion? If there is confusion it means you are reading something extra into what is there. If you carry out all the tasks in the schedule you will have successfully serviced your bike.

Specifically as it doesn't even mention primary lubricant in the schedule why would you think it missing or confusing?
