Yeah, they told you wrong...no wheel bearing tool needed. Normal Hand tools, may have to get a couple Torx/Hex bits and 12pt scokets

You should try to do this yourself. Not that big of deal. Haven't you read cvaria's sportster thread.

That being said, if I was in your situation, Instead of $350 plus coating, I would would do a quick cheap paint/plasti-dip for now until you might want to get into it further yourself later.

Four years ago I powder coated my wheels, and rattle can painted the white checkers on the wheels, and rattle can painted the fork legs.

This is what they looked like 4 years ago-

This is what they looked like a few months ago, after 4 years of riding and well over 20K miles.

I'm happy with how it's held up.

If disassembling the front, so all the parts are separately coated, including the trees ,black color, might want to consider installing "fork gaiters", so everything is black to cover up the silver chrome tubes or
black chrome the tubes.

Here are a few pics from the Sportster Winter Makeover thread showing how we did the rattle can.

Looks crazy, but you can use tin foil and painters tape to cover anything you don't want painted and then prep the rest. They key is in the prep work. That gray is self etching primer.

Wheel was powder coated, then taped off for rattle can of the white-

That was my intention.
Driving to CT and back yesterday, I think I came to the conclusion that the previous owner was able to swap his springs, so I should be able to handle taking off the forks, and being able to rattle can the trees, and forks, and calipers, and make it look how I want, with only having to really re-do the brake lines, which probably could be refreshed anywho.
