H-D mufflers with catalyst?
Performed extensive online research that returned nothing concrete.
Specifically front & rear wheelmufflers for 09 883C, registered in CA, with no notifications.
So, decided two go to the XL parts books starting in 04 with the rubber engine mount design change.
All the mufflers used between 04 to 13 were introduced in 04, all with a dash 04 part #.
2014 & up models use different part numbers with the cross over tube welded to front & rear collector tubes,
compared to the cross over tube using socket joints in the muffler for 04 to 13 era.
Identified three different dash 04 muffler part numbers,
Front muffler:
64842-04. Domestic
65232-04 California(CA)
Rear muffler
64890-04 Domestic & California
64842-04 Domestic
Note 64842-04 , used both front & rear on some models.
Believe 64232-04 has a catalyst core, since it is designated specifically for CA and was used only for the front collector
Also, believe 64890-04 does not have catalyst because it was used for all states for rear application
and used initially in 04 before stage 2 CARB emission requirements in 08 & same federal EPA requirement in 2010.
64842-04 was used in the front, only, for 04 & 05
in 06, 64842-04 was used both front and rear on 1200XLR & 1200XLC for 49 states except CA. which used the 65232-04 frontier
and 06, 883C used 64842-04 front & 65232-04, 06, 883 Std used 64890-04 rear & 65232-04 for all 50 states
So, 06 was a bad year for 883s , since all the 50 state bikes had catalyst in the front muffler and only CA 1200R & 1200C had front 65232-04 with catalyst.
Things changed in 07 with EFI
64842-04 was used in front & 64890-04 in rear, 65232-04 with catalyst was deleted from the lineup., same setup for 08.
2009 883C, incorporated 64842-04 both front and rear , all the way to 2013.
My question still unanswered, does 64842-04 have catalyst material core?
Since it was first introduced in 04 for rear application, would conclude that this muffler is catalyst free.
Have some XL mufflers with road rash, need to check part #s, if have a 64842-04, will cut the tail off and remove baffle core to confirm.
Looking for any comments or input on this subject.

The 64842-04 muffler incorporates no catalyst material to meet CARB(California Air Resources Board) or Federal EPA requirements.
The stringent tier 2 , HC & NOX emissions requirement for large manufactures for motorcycles over 179cc of .8 g/km was implemented by CARB in 2008 and EPA in 2010.
Tier 1 CARB standards were implemented in 2004 by CARB and the same standards implemented by EPA in 2006
Found a U-Tube video produced in the UK where a pair of Sportster H-D mufflers with catalyst was converted to a non catalyst muffler using a Vance and rear& Hines spiral tube baffle.
The catalyst honey comb structure has the same diameter as the ID of the outer muffler casing and is located in the forward section upstream of the baffle.
Suspect the XLs exported to Europe require a catalyst type muffler because of the very stringent emissions requirement of .3 g/km for HC & NOX.
The purpose of this research project stems from the statement by the exhaust system manufactures and their distributors, " NOT FOR SALE IN CALIFORNIA" which probably is a liability statement.
Understand the exhaust system and the fuel injection software map grid are matched together along with the air cleaner to meet CARB & EPA standards.
The local H-D can tune or calibrate any XL with any stage 1 after market exhaust and/or A/C system using H-D maps, but cannot install, except for stock replacement or SE series parts.
