2003 XL1200C: how come the worn out part I need to replace has 42 teeth and the replacement I found according to the part number is a 41-tooth?

This is the damaged gear that was on the bike...42 tooth! As you can see, the splines were welded over but they have cracked. This is the replacement I found online If you count, it's a 41-tooth gear! According to the part number search though, this IS the correct piece. part #19 on the diagram
