Default 1999 HD 883 Sportster Carb Question

Hello everyone! Im new to the HD world (converted Honda guy... hey, im on this side, no need to poke fun )... Im mostly a loner, i dont have biker friends or ride with groups (which i dont necessarily mind). So, im reaching out to the forums for help! I recently purchased a 1999 883C sportster from an older couple that was done absolutely amazing and i got it for a STEAL, might i add! It has the screaming eagle intake and exhaust on it and was SUPPOSEDLY rejetted... I, for do not think so. It idles great and runs great. Only issue is when i hit 98 mph the bike starves out for gas and dies. It also seems like it has a dead spot in the poer when i try to pass. To clarify, i was only seeing how the bike responded on an old highway in my rural town, otherwise i would have never know this. My theory, for what its worth, is that the bike wasnt rejetted when the intake and exhaust were put on or the needle height in the carb isnt set correctly. I ride it daily and recently took it on a 400 mile trip and it didnt give the 1st problem (i didnt go over 80mph though).
Sorry if thats long winded, but i need to know what i need to know the proper jet that should be in this bike and im hoping the experience here will be able to help me. Also, from my research, i think the stock jet is a 42-160, for what that is worth.
Thanks in advance.

Here is a pic of my bike as well! I can also send videos to ppl if you want to hear the idle (which is smooth) and offer me advice that way!

Welcome to the forum, I like riding alone as well. Sounds like you got a great deal on a great bike!

For my 1991, it's 42/160 for CA bikes, 45/175 for the "49 state" models. This is the listing for both 1200 and 883 in my FSM.

I'm running a 45 pilot and 175 dynojet mainjet (I put in a dynojet kit back in 1991), which is the same size as the Keihin 175 mainjet. I have SE intake and exhaust as well. Check your vacuum lines to the petcock, perhaps you are not getting fuel flow. I don't have a vacuum petcock, but the '99 models do. If you remove the small metal cap over the idle mix screw on the carb underside, you can set it to 2.5 turns out and fine tune from there.

If that metal cap is gone, someone has likely changed the screw setting, and/or been inside to rejet as well. Hopefully you have a 45 pilot jet, it works much better, no carb coughs anymore.

98 on an 883, good job!!!! Perhaps you hit the rev limiter? Good looking bike, pretty rad looking paint. Lose the crash bars, your bike will look so much better.

If you are interested, go to xlforum.net and check out the "stickies" on carburetors, recently, we have been providing information on stock jets and what year you find them (by carb part number). I believe the 49 state bike jetting got leaner after my year bike, but you'd have to read the "sticky" to find out.

John

Thanks for the reply! Turns out i had a 44/160. I disassembled the carb yesterday and thus, finding the issue. My main jet was barely hanging on. Whoever did the install didnt snug the main jet in its hole. Took a total of 30 mins from taking the air filter off to get to the carb to reinstalling and hitting the road. The bike sounds so much better and the throttle is so much more responsive! I took it out and held the throttle for a good 2 miles hitting a whopping 104 mph and the bike never giving an issue! So glad its fixed! Also, as far as the crash bar, i agree 110%! the windscreen is also getting removed, im gonna put drag bars on it, wrap the exhaust, drop the rear end 3" and move the front fender to the back, and replace the seat to a single. Its gonna be a head turning "bobber-ish" bike! None of that has happened yet becasue i wanted the bike to be running at 100% before i messed with the cosmetics. Thanks for the advice and the compliments!

Welcome from the Ozarks!
Glad you're getting the carb issue worked out. Lone rider myself, mostly. Occasional rides 1-5 friends, but never those large group 50mph 'pirate parades' you see all too frequently.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I joined a biker group once - not a gang - and I felt a little uncomfortable riding in a group. Just trying to stay in formation without getting too close was sort of a pain, but I hate to be antisocial !

I know what you mean! i rode with 3 people one time in my life... i didnt like it... and as far as joining a group or "patching in" somewhere... im just not about that life i dont guess.... but if i catch myself watching Sons of Anarchy, i think i need to join up!

But in reference to hijacking the thread, the problem is sorted. anything goes now!
