Default 1995 883?

I've been thinking about adding a 5 speed Sporty to my collection for a zip around town and back roads bike. Currently own 2 Dyna's and a 86 Liberty Sportster which is all stock. This would also serve as a platform for my incessant need to tinker. Since the Liberty is 100% stock and I wish to keep it that way, I figured a inexpensive Sportster for modification would fit my requirements. There's a 95 883 available locally at a used car dealership (They often sell used Harleys there) which has 10,000 miles on it. It's in really nice shape, good tires, has SS slash cut pipes and seems to have been lowered via shorter shocks (Which I do not like) Asking price is $3000.00. Would be hoping to get for around $2500.00. What do you all think? Any weaknesses in that era sportster I should be looking for?

That's a great year. Hard mount, solid bike. Carb to play with, no plastic, strong clutch. You could go crazy tinkering with it if you want something to play with.

Love my ole '96.

My '96 XL883 is a solid, fun to ride, great handling, and running great motorcycle. I get near 55 mpg. It has only a stage one, yet feels peppy and responsive up to about 80+. I commute at 70+ and it is a great commuter. I redid mine so it does not look stock any longer, but the drive train except for stage one is completely stock. Almost no difference between '95 and '96 883 with 2.5 tank.

I agree with Lonnie 100%. That having been said, if you want a bike that is more for riding than tinkering, get a rubber mount, EFI. I owned a 82 883 hugger, and now a 17 883 iron. They are completely different bikes. I ride two lane, hilly country roads, and the new iron is a fantastic bike for that type of use.
