Default Question about Rear Turn Indicators

I've had my bike a year and realized that I rode for the 1st time at night just the other day. It wasn't by choice, it just worked out that way.

I met the wife and kids for dinner and then they followed me home. When we got home, she said that she couldn't see me very well. I took my bike out and turned on the key just to see how bright the lights were. In the back, I only had the rear brake light lit up. The turn indicators were dark. Is that normal? The front ones are always lit up so I assumed the rear ones were the same way.

The rear signal lights only work if they are red lens and you have a special diode module that makes them run/brake/signal. Which is a good idea to do. Harley has a plug and play module and lens to replace your yellow ones with red.
Mine use to be yellow. I also replaced the actual center taillight with a brighter led bulb. Did not do the signal ones since it required resistors to keep my older system functioning

Yup. That's all folks.

I replaced my rear lights with the Kuryakyn run/turn/brake lights and put a Badlands TS module in to run a full LED setup. The run/turn/brake lights require some rewiring but well worth it. The Badlands modules are plug-n-play with existing harnesses though.

I'm still not satisfied with visibility though; I'm going to incorporate some more running/brake lights in the seat and sissy bar I think.

Of course my bikes an old girl and I don't know what yours is so maybe chopping and re-wiring isn't your thing.

Mine:

The install:

The rear were a pain to wire. Check out something they have called Triple Play, which may make installation easier.

In my state (WI) any rear running light must be red...this is probably the case everywhere as I think this is a US, if not international, standard. If your turn signals are amber, then they can only be turn signals and not full-time running lights. When I did my total LED upgrade, I used the Custom Dynamics inserts for my turn signals and replaced the original amber turn signal lens covers with smoke ones. Used the red LED inserts for the rear signals and the Dynamic Ringz up front (white outer rings for running lights, and amber centers when turn signals are on...they are SO cool!), and the CD smoke layback tail light. I also added the CD Triple Play run/turn/brake module so that my rear turn signals are also running lights and have it set to one of the strobe settings for the tail light when braking. My dad said that the first time he rode with me afterwards that the lights were much brighter than they were before and that when I touched my brakes it was very eye-catching.
