I have a 1992 883 Deluxe. The tail light does not light up. It works just fine when I apply either brake but just doesn't come on while running. I replaced the bulb but that did not fix it. All other lights are working just fine. I have not checked the fuses yet because I ran out of time. That would be my next course of action. Any other ideas what it could be?
If the running lights in the front turn signals are working, the fuse is ok.
Look for a damaged wire underneath the rear fender (the green wire), also check the connector for that rear harness.
Unplug the connector and check voltage at the connector on the main harness side (it`s a blue wire on that side of the connector, only Harley can tell you why a blue wire feeds a green wire ).
Update: now the brake light doesn't work. Replaced the bulb again to make sure, still nothing. Traced the wires all the way forward, nothing. I ended up calling my local dealer today and asking them to take a look at it. Hopefully they will have some answers.
I got the diagnosis this weekend. The tail light was replaced at some point (I'm the third owner) and it was inproperly done. It was glued to the fender instead of using the bolts so it had a bad ground. It was also missing the rubber grommets to keep the wires from rubbing against it so the one wire was rubbed through and fraying. It is currently getting replaced by a dealer. Shout out to Susquehanna Valley HD for being very kind and helpful. Harrison in the service area was great to work with.
