Default Brake Review: Wilwood GP310

Hi guys, I recently finished a rebuild on a 98 883 with a 1200 kit. When I was deciding what to do with the front end, I knew I had to address the stock front brake which was seriously lacking.

I considered shelling out the cash for a dual disc front end, but this looked like it was going to be in the realm of $1k for everything needed. I considered other options, like adapter brackets, Brembos off sport bikes, XR1200 calipers etc, but all of these required some form of 'fudging' to make work on stock pre-99 forks. I finally decided to try the Wilwood GP310 caliper instead, which with some clicking around can be had for $210 off eBay or Amazon.

I'll skip to the goods and say this caliper is hands down the cheapest but BEST upgrade I made to the bike during the entire build. My bike stops on a dime and has great 'feathering' response. I never expected this much of an increase in stopping power from a single-sided caliper (especially for only 200 bucks), but I could not recommend this caliper enough. It definitely highlights how inadequate the stock caliper was. If I had to guess, I'd say stopping power was increased by approximately 1000%

...kidding about the 1000%, but I'll honestly say it's a complete night and day difference.

10/10 would recommend and would definitely purchase again!

Good review.

You say "single sided" but I thought the Wilwood design has two pistons on each side of the rotor.

Interesting, thanks for posting. I see they make some for 84-99 models as well.

His reference would be to the sides of motorcycle, not the sides of the caliper.
