Default Top End Ticking

Howdy Crew,

I've been doing some internet sleuthing, but haven't quite found the answer I'm looking for.

Here's the deal:

For anyone that hasn't followed my 1250 install on my '04 883, I've been getting some top end ticking. Everything else about the bike is running great BUT at any RPM, load or not, the top end is ticking like crazy. Sounds like someone going ape on a typewriter. Even after I installed Rockouts, the noise is still there.

Any thoughts on this? Is it possible the lifters or push rods are bad?

Thanks for your help!

Sounds like valve clearance is too big. Maybe your new gaskets are thicker and the lifters can't take up the slack. Just a guess. Maybe somebody at Hammer can give you some info. I used the thin metal crush gaskets that came with the kit and had no problem. Or maybe your lifters aren't pumping up for some reason.

ask hammer directly. i'm sure they've seen nearly every combination of ticking.

On which side do you hear the ticking? If it's on the throttle side then it could be.

On my bike, the ticking is on the clutch lever side, so I've ruled out lifters or pushrods and am still puzzled as to what may be causing the ticking. Like you, I too installed rockouts.

Ah, that makes sense. I emailed Aaron, he's been SUPER helpful. I'll shoot a video of it and post it here when I get home. Thanks for your help guys.

Hey Lewk, I'll have to hone in on where it's coming from tonight, I "thought" I was hearing it more from the right side.

Did you install different cams? Different cams can make a real racket. I know my Andrews are super noisy even with rocker lockers. The good news is if it is the cams, the noise is not a problem.

No cams, just 1250 cylinder kit and used stock heads, etc.

It's probably the bottle cap bouncing around in there from that last beer you were drinking while buttoning things up.

Let us know what you find out.
