Since iv'e owned my 05 1200xlc the starter seems like it really struggles. It scares me at times, but it always starts. The battery seems to be good , when i plug my "battery- tender" in the amber light turns green within just a few seconds. At times it spins right up and starts and other times it struggles . The times that it struggles the "check engine" light almost always comes on. It almost seems like a starter motor issue to me dun-no (?)
Has anybody else had this problem and is there a cure? Thanks in advance for any help..........
Can i just test at the battery tender pigtail?
if so what voltage reading should i get?
Take the battery out of the bike.
Fully charge the battery.
Take the battery to an auto parts store and ask to have it "Load Tested". Almost all auto parts stores will do it for free.

Thanks.... that sounds like a good solution. If the battery turns out to be ok.....then it sounds like a new starter is in my future
Do you routinely start in neutral? On my Ultra if I start in gear, even with the clutch fully "disengaged", there is a slight lurch and mild "strain" on the starter. Is it possible this is what you're experiencing?
