It feels like the fuel is cut off intermittently really fast and the rpms will bounce around, sounding like the bike is sputtering as you described and like this... https://youtu.be/t3WiRFdAeBI
It should not cause your engine to die though. Sounds like you may have other issues. Mine kicks in at 6300 rpm and sounds exactly like the bikes in the videos. Bike just stops pulling.
thanks for going through the trouble to download the videos , it really helps to hear it as opposed to someone trying to describe it...........
when mine hits the limiter, the cut-out sounds way more aggressive than either one of those 2 bikes.

No problem at all. I'm not sure if the carbed Sportster version of the rev limiter produces a different result but I wouldn't think the engine should completely shut down. I hope you get it figured out if it is an issue with soemthing else.
Maybe you can take a video clip of it happening and post it so others with experience on carbed Sportsters can maybe give you more info and suggestions.

The rev limiter should kick in at ~6200 RPM. From the chart below match your gear to the 6200 RPM line and you'll know about what speed the limiter should kick in for that gear.

maybe by next spring i'll figure out a way to video it happening........winter has set in here, putting my riding on hold.
thanks
I have experience with two FLHTC's a 99 and a 09. Both bikes were bone stock and the rev limiters reacted very different. The 99 had what I would call a soft rev iimit where it would just level off when it hit the set max rpm's. The 09 has a hard rev limit where it is like you hit the kill switch when you hit the set max rpm's. The 99 was much more pleasant to drive when I was getting on it. The 09 is much more touchy when you get on it and if you hit the max rpm's in 1st or 2nd say goodbye to any good acceleration.

INTERESTING......sounds like they can all react differently. My rev limiter sounds more like your '09. Makes me wonder why some are more aggressive than others. Have you done anything to your '09 to correct it? Does the rev-limiter live inside the ECM? If so, do you think re-setting it would help? Does a code come up when the rev-limiter is triggered?

I'm assuming that the 09 is functioning properly. Next time I take it in I will ask the dealer if it is functioning properly. Not sure where the rev-limiter lives and don't know how to reset the ECM. Have never seen a code come up. My wife's 02 low rider has a soft rev-limiter like the 99.
Perhaps on the carbed bikes the limiter can only affect ignition, since the carb cannot be shut down instantaneously. On EFI, the injectors can be shut down instantly, so maybe they limit fuel supply.
