Being a disabled veteran with limited funds, I've been priced out of the new car, bike, house, boat etc., etc., etc. market. I saved my pennies for a couple of years to be able to buy a used 2005 XL 883 (plain Jane). I love it. If anybody thinks it's a girl's bike I don't care..................because it's mine and I finally own a Harley and proud of it! Oh, I too have seen a good bit of aftermarket parts on Ebay for it.

Thank You for setting me straight on engine size of the first Sportsters, Old Fender Guy. My sister gave me a Harley book that I thought was accurate, that's where I got the info about the 883.
I love Sportsters, still have tree of them if you count my 04 1200 Buell Lightning. The last oneI purchased new was a Y2K 1200 S. I reluctantly traded it in on my 06 Bob. I'm afraid to ride a new rubber mount because I know what would happen if I did.
I can find lots of parts for the 883, and as far as being different goes, I see all H-Ds as being a lot more alike than they are different regardless of their size or engine displacement. The rules dictating engine mods for 883 racing series was pretty strict, but good tuners still managed to get 60 plus horsepower out of them.
More trivia: The 1988 883 Evo Sportster (Dark Plumb Hugger) had a one year only rubber intake manifold. I loved watching it pulse in and out as the motor idled.
I was told the Plumb color happened because it was Liz's favorite color and Malcolm wanted it for her birthday.
I hear you on the comparison of the 883 & 1200. I have an '06 883C and I enjoy it. I intend to get the conversion for it also. The bike is proportioned with my height and weight but I want more power out of it. By the way, how does that La Pera solo seat feel? I have been looking at getting it or the Corbin.
I'm 5'10 175-180lbs and with the sundowner I sit perfect on my bike.My buddoes have more power than I and more chrome being a 1200 but I look at the price difference between the 2 and see the conversion as the smart way to go. A full on SE kit installed for $1800 or the base conversion for $800 on top of the 883 price is less than a new 1200 here. The 883 does great around here in the mountain twisties I ride on and winter brings the 1200 kit so I don't see myself needing another bike unless Dawn wants more room &ifshe doesn't want to ride her own[8D]
The Bare Bones was nice looking but it wasn't for me unless my trips were a 1/2 hour or less[&:]
