Default 883 = Red Headed Step Child??

Being a redheaded step child myself, I feel that I have some knowledge in this area. And it seems to me, being the proud owner of a 2005 883L, that the 883 Sporty gets the shaft. Not the 1200 - they are like the first born and get preferential treatment. But the 883 - well, everybody loves 'em but they don't want to admit it.

I bring this up because searching for aftermarket parts on the web for 883's is next to impossible unless you have specific part numbers. Or maybe I am inept at web searching, but it seems everything I find is geared towards 1200's, or the "REAL" bikes.......

It sucks. Maybe I should paint my bike red. Then we could get matching "redheaded" step children shirts.........

Watcha looking for? A lot of stuff is the same, internal motor parts are the biggest difference.

I love the 883s, just took the little ladies out for a spin and its a blast to ride.

That's funny.

I feel no ill-will towards 883s at all. I just happended upon a great deal on my 1200 ($6k with only 93 miles on it a couple of years ago).

What I do find interesting though, is a lot of people eventually converting their 883s to 1200s or even bigger.

So, I don't know. Maybe it's just a "number" thing. Or like having a Mustang Cobra instead of a Mustang GT...

I think your bike rocks!

If 883 is your first Harley, you are probably ok, after you rode a 1200, you will not go back to 883. I ride with many 883 riders and they can keep up with me without a problem. The only noticeable difference is going up hill and passing, a little more juice I must say. If you are happy with it, stick with it. Last year I was looking at a 883C when I started but they had one 1200L floor model left for the year, I got a good deal on it so I brought it home.

I'm definately going to do the conversion. I think more juice will be just the thing I need so the bike doesn't work quite as hard. And l do love my bike. Its just that when ever I look for aftermarket items, such as headlight/taillight setups as an example, its not so readily available unless I have specific part numbers from catalogs or such. Plus having the king tank alot of items won't work on my bike.

I love the king tank tho. Even if I have to fill up a little more often............

Headlights and other such things are the same whether it is 883 or 1200. Seats, lights, chrome bolt ons and such are exactly the same from 883 to 1200

The 883 Sportster has gotta be the most popular Harleys ever made. I doubt a stepchild. Parts are everywhere.

The 883 EVO Sportster has been manufactured since 1986, so there should be plenty of parts available...

In fact, a little known fact is that the 883 EVO went into production a couple of years earlier than the 1200 EVO.

In 1986 Harley introduced the 883 EVO to the Sportster, along with a 1100 EVO. In 1988 the 1100 EVO engine was increased to 1200 CC's.

But even so, the 883 EVO has been around for 21 years, and the 1200 EVO for 19 years.

I came home from a short ride today on my Heritage and I eyed my wifes 883 in the driveway. If it wasn't for the fact I had to wait until the friken laydown license plate sticky stuff had to cure for 24 hours I would have jumped on it and went into town. I love her bike. And I mean love. 883's ROCK!!!!
