Cool

Well I just bought a 1975 ironhead sportster XLH 1000. A dream come true to finally own my own bike and ride free.
However here I am in too deep with the cost of getting it safe to ride. Its been sitting for about 13-15 years. It starts
but I know I need to have everything resealed, compression check and cables checked, new tires and I really want a
springer front end and new seat. I never new how much this would all cost me Ive registered it insured it and even
got my licsence. This is making me sad! Anyone out there want to help me out? Im willing to do the work myself if
someone could guide me through the process .Ive got only $1000 to spend on this!! Am I a fool for even asking?
Is there hope for me??

Monica, Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. I suggest you take things in small steps, not giant strides! Shelf the springer forks for now, until the bike is running just right in every other way you want. If you don't already have one, buy yourself the factory service manual for your bike. Your local dealer can supply, although may have to order in for you, alternatively try one of the major on-line dealers like Surdyke. Unless you're very lucky, any good samaritan who helps you out will benefit from the FSM.

Plan to fit new tyres first and change all the fluids, including brake fluid. I take my wheels out, but take them to a local dealer to replace tyres. Also get new inner tubes. I use my local Yamaha dealer, as they are close by and will order in any tyres I want. They feed me coffee while I wait and I tell them they are my favourite Harley dealer! Once you've done all that and checked your brakes and lights work you should be good for a test ride round the block.

Hope that helps - best of luck!

Thank you for the advice, I will work on getting the owners guide for sure. I know I have a leak as it sits right now. I really want to just get on it and ride RIGHT NOW! LOL

Safety 1st; "ride right now" never. Please follow grbrown's very sound advice. Meanwhile, welcome to the forum.

Stopping is way more important than going. Make sure brakes, tires, suspension all sound, then tackle the "go" stuff. Post up some pictures when you can.

You might also go to xlforum.net. There are a lot of owners of Sportster "Ironheads" and they are definitely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I'm sure they would drool over another beautiful Ironhead being resurrected!!! Welcome.

It is just possible you can download the owners manual by going to the H-D website. I'm not sure if they go back that far. Check the Owners tab. The owners manual is a small booklet for the new owner, the FSM I mentioned is a large book on service and maintenance.

I did post this a few time in different wording but same concept. I’m new to the site and didn’t know where or how to get information and ask for help. I’m not a scammer and I’m not asking for money or free anything. I’m just asking for help and guidance. Sorry I over posted on the site.

Sorry for the confusion. I’m new to the site and just over posted. Just trying to get help and guidance. I’m not asking for anything but that.
