Default question about front forks

Question about front forks/front end? This is for 2017 roadster

so I put on some clip ons and the front end slid on me while I was working on it. I put everything back together. At first there was an issue when turning the front side to side; there would be a slight click or stop as the front turned either left or right, then the front turned in normally after this point. Anyways, I was able to make adjustments and resolve the issue.

However there is a slight play/movement front to back; about a quarter inch. When the front wheel is off the ground , if you grab the front wheel and push there is this slight play. Is this normal? The manuel was not very helpful. I did not check prior to working on the bike if it was like that or not. I can’t find my torque wrench so everything is just tightened down for now. When I took the stem nut off I barely turned it and it came off already.

only the top triple clamp was removed to allow sliding on the clip ons.

With the front wheel off the ground, grasp the fork legs near the discs and attempt to rock the fork assembly front to rear. If you have movement which you will feel as a slight knocking coming from the steering head, your steering head bearings will require adjustment. There should be next to no movement front to rear, however once you have tightened the steering head bearings, check that the fork assembly is free to move from lock to lock smoothly without any binding or tight spots. It's a matter of finding the best compromise between both of these factors. It's more of a subjective thing, rather than any hard and fast measurement.

No that movement is not normal. Two things to suggest:
  • as a separate exercise you should adjust your steering head bearings and fall-away, as per your FSM,
  • before tightening everything up after installing your clip-ons, tighten the top tree clamps then operate the front brake and pump the forks several times, to bed everything in just so. Finally tighten everything up as per your FSM.
The pumping ensures that your fork legs are parallel and suspension moves freely, before tightening up the bracket/tree clamps.
