I've had my 2016 48 for almost a year now, and since I've owned er I'm the only person. Who has taken a wrench to er. Most recently I installed the burly brand voyager bag mounts and had to relocate my rear indicators. All went well easy install, and I did it clean like. Soldering all the indicator wires that had to be extended and AND BUTTONING them up with shrink tubing and All That. Real clean like. So I hopped on my bike a 0345 having to be to work by 0400. **** don't forget your first daily fuel stop. So I come Rollin up to the pump and I just get this big whiff of what doesn't exactly smell like burning electrical , but has hints of that accompanied by hair. So my mind goes to wiring that I just did rip my seat off and check it out, and it's still clean and look in sharp so I'm sniffing arou d like a weirdo at 350 in the morning and can't find anything.checked all easily accessible fluids and it's all good. But it goes away almost immediately. I've smellt it the past two days and everything appears to be legit . Any thoughts?? I did just to my bars and clutch cable/wiring extension like 2mo ago. I'm thinking clutch? I dunno wow I just wrote a novel but hey what are forums for. Haha any insight would be appreciated
Rear tire rubbing on a bolt head or something ? I have same year bike and model. Relocated the rear signals on mine it’s tight in there not a whole lot on clearance. Just a thought.
If the OP don't recognize burnt clutch smell they may ask someone else.
But I don't think this is the issue as the clutch was functioning correctly before the latest install work. OP could look to see if they kinked or rerouted the cable as a lead.
You are ruling out your wiring, yet turn on the bike and fell each wire for heat. Maybe you crossed a wire plus burnt wiring has a unique smell.
My diagnosis. I be swayed to the exhaust heating up you side bags. Leather? You mention smell of hair.
Post # 2 above has an excellent point, bolt touching rear tire.
thanks y'all for the thoughts. I had my neighbor who also has sportster see if he could catch a wiff, but nothing. I checked the tire and bolt clears clearance and that's all good. No signs of contact on rear tire. The wiring looms looks straight and no signs of heat. Haven't rode with the bags yet almost here from revzilla. Weird stuff. Bike runs like a champ. Might be one of those wait a see type deals.
