Starter Replacement + Backfiring through intake
After many years of yearning and pleading, I have finally bought my first Harley. Over this past weekend I picked up a 2012 Iron 883 with 300 miles on it. Previous owner said it had a dead battery and that it backfires and stalls. I figured I could replace the battery and that the issue with its stalling would likely be attributed to bad gas and hunker fuel system since it has only seen maybe 2 or 3 tanks of gas in its lifetime.
I quickly bought it a new battery and trickle charger, but found that it still had trouble getting the starter to engage. Even with the battery reading %90+. I gave the starter some taps with a mallet and itd fire right up. I have since gotten the primary cover apart and the starter unbolted, but it seems there isnt enough space to remove it without taking the exhaust off, does anyone know if theres a way around that?
Also, some more info on the backfiring/stalling. I found out after purchasing the bike that the previous owner already replaced the bad gas and ran fuel system cleaner through it, as well as replaced the spark plugs. When running, it seems to backfire through the intake at idle and is hesitant to react to throttle inputs. Once it does get to higher rpms, it seems to run fine.
If any HD gurus out there have experienced symptoms like this, I would greatly appreciate your help,
Thanks!
Gio
p.s. The only mod on the bike is a screaming eagle intake.
As for the backfiring, perhaps you have an intake manifold leak. Start it up and use spray carb cleaner or something similar on the opposite side of the aircleaner and see if that changes anything. If so you likely have an intake manifold leak.
Lastly, get a service manual as soon as you can
