HELP!!! Trouble starting
If anyone can give me their thoughts, they are greatly appreciated.
To start: 2007 xl1200c with 36,000 miles.
The trouble started with me getting only a click when I pressed the starter button. I could press it repeatedly and it would only click for 1/2 a dozen clicks or so and would then turn over and start. I bought the Electrical Manual and ran through the flow chart. I was getting good voltage readings off of the battery, but didn't have an ammeter to do the draw test. I replaced that battery because it was 7 years old and had never been replaced. No change. I was getting a click at the relay, but not the solenoid. I was getting battery voltage at the solenoid wire with every click. This led me to replace the starter with an aftermarket. No change. DAMN!!!. I then replaced the relay (even though it tested fine) and the clicking problem went away. It now turns over every time I hit the starter button.
Now, it will start fine when I first take it off the tender, but after running it for a while it won't start right away. I stopped to get gas and when I tried to start it, it cranked but wouldn't start. I had to wait a few minutes and then it would start. (almost like it was flooded) but it is fuel injected. And now with the new battery and starter, I can only crank it a few times before the battery dies. I get good voltage readings on the battery. 12.88 volts when sitting and 14 volts when running.
I am at the end of my rope. I don't know what else to look at.
Thank you,
Ride Safe,
Art
