If the PCM has a bad ground, it will do what you describe. On OBDII systems, they freak and will act out of control. In the ignition switch circuit. You switch it off but the PCM is not responsive. As for the speedo, same thing. It looses logic in the PCM because of a bad ground. That's why it doesn't light up. The circuit is broken or the control loop is damaged or lost it's programming. A OBDII system either works or it doesn't. Since it is program mapped, it can loose (or forget)part of it's programming when a ground problem occures. Just guessing.. It has a bad ground and the PCM needs to be reflashed once the problem is fixed.

Opps sorry! Program Control Module.

My nightster must have come off the "don't F this one up" line. Because I have not even had a flinch from my bike.
Well my two cents on diagnostic code/check engine light.. All OBDII ecm'swilldrop into baseline program if battery power is dropped typically after 30 minutes of power loss.I agree with DallasTX in the badground issue, if youhad no power when you went to start the bike up and the battery is charged,I would check the battery negative post andwherethe negative ground connects to the rear of the engine case. Chances are the dipstick at the dealer didn't do there job when they installed the battery.

LOL! My battery was deader than crap when I bought my bike. Made them install a new one on the spot or no deal.

Ok... got 'er back today.

Two things:

1. Bad Ignition Relay. Was taking in water - shorting (creating that little sound I was talking about) and draining the battery.

2. Ignition modual had come unplugged under the seat causing the EFI codes. It would appear it was not clicked all the way in and vibrated out some. That, or the plug itself does not hold tight. I will be watching that.

Everything fixed. No charge of course. Had the Bike 1000 mile service (included with my purchase) and they changed over to synthetics for me at no extra charge. Had it fixed the very next day when promised - so I must say. They did me right.
